How to do Lateral Raise (Cable)

Setup

Stand sideways to a low cable pulley with feet hip-width apart. Grasp the handle with your far hand across your body, arm hanging at your side with a slight bend in the elbow.

How to do it

  1. Lead with your elbow and raise your arm out to the side until it reaches shoulder height.
  2. Keep your wrist neutral and pinky slightly higher than your thumb throughout the movement.
  3. Control the descent back to the starting position without letting the weight stack crash.
  4. Maintain a stable torso without leaning away from the cable.

Watch out for

  • Shrugging the shoulder upward instead of keeping it down and back during the raise.
  • Using momentum by swinging the body or raising the arm too quickly.
  • Lifting the arm above shoulder height which shifts tension away from the side delt.
