How to do Dips (Triceps)

Setup

Position yourself between parallel bars with arms fully extended, supporting your body weight. Lean slightly forward with knees bent and feet crossed behind you.

How to do it

  1. Keep elbows tucked close to your sides throughout the movement
  2. Lower yourself until upper arms are parallel to the ground
  3. Press through your palms to drive back up to full arm extension
  4. Maintain a slight forward lean to engage triceps
  5. Control the descent for 2-3 seconds before pressing up

Watch out for

  • Flaring elbows out wide shifts emphasis to chest instead of triceps
  • Leaning too far forward turns the exercise into a chest dip
  • Dropping too deep can place excessive stress on the shoulder joint
