How to do Preacher Curl

Setup

Sit at a preacher bench with your upper arms resting flat on the angled pad, chest against the top. Grip the barbell with an underhand grip, shoulder-width apart, arms fully extended.

How to do it

  1. Keep your upper arms pressed firmly against the pad throughout the entire movement.
  2. Curl the bar upward by contracting your biceps until your forearms are vertical.
  3. Squeeze hard at the top position for a brief moment.
  4. Lower the bar with control until your arms are fully extended again.
  5. Avoid letting your elbows lift off the pad or sliding your body upward.

Watch out for

  • Lifting the elbows off the pad to gain momentum instead of isolating the biceps.
  • Using too much weight and only performing partial repetitions at the top.
  • Dropping the weight quickly on the way down instead of controlling the eccentric portion.
