What I mean by a hotel room workout that's worth doing
Not a 45-minute hotel-gym circuit I found on a reel. Not "I'll see if I feel like it after the dinner." Twenty minutes, before I sit down, using whatever is in the room or the sad closet labeled Fitness Center.
Worth doing means I finish it. That is the standard. Fancy is how I used to talk myself out of starting.
The empty-room version
- Split squats or goblet-less squats to a suitcase
- Push-ups (hands on the bed edge if the floor is a crime)
- Backpack hinge
- Side plank or dead bug
I put a travel period in FlexFit with the equipment I actually have — often nothing. Bodyweight is the floor. The program does not reset because I am in a different zip code.
The two-dumbbell version
Floor press. One-arm row. Goblet squat. Suitcase carry if the hallway is empty. Same 20 minutes. I have been oddly happy to see a pair of 25s.
What I do not do on the road
New exercises I cannot check in a mirror. Max-effort anything. A "vacation challenge." I am trying to arrive home still in the program, not as a new person with sore wrists.
The point I had to learn twice
Travel is where weeks go to die if I require a perfect gym. A hotel room workout is how I stopped requiring that.
