The 20-minute dumbbell workout I do when I can't get to the gym

When do I reach for a 20 minute dumbbell workout?

When the gym is a 40-minute round trip I do not have. When the day already won. When the honest choice is this or nothing, and I used to pick nothing and call it "I'll go Thursday."

Thursday would then also not happen. That was the whole personality.

What the session looks like

I pick:

  • A squat pattern or a hinge (goblet squat, RDL)
  • A press (floor press if I have no bench, half-kneeling press if the back is loud)
  • A row (one-arm row on a bench, or a backpack row in a hotel, but this is the home version)
  • A core move I can do without a crunch-off (pallof, dead bug, suitcase hold)

Two or three sets. I pair the press and the row. Rest is walking to the other bell.

Why I stopped waiting for a "real" session

A 20 minute dumbbell workout is not a compromise with my values. It is the values, applied to a Tuesday. The program continues. The location is home. The clock is 20.

In FlexFit I set the duration and the home equipment list. If the session that comes back has seven exercises, I set the duration wrong.

What 20 minutes cannot do

It cannot be a full lower-body day with walking lunges and a 4-minute rest. I stop asking it to. That was the trick. The session is allowed to be small and still count.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in my 20 minute dumbbell workout?
Usually four moves: a squat or hinge, a press, a row, and something for the midsection. Two or three sets. Superset the press and row if time is mean.
Is 20 minutes enough to matter?
Enough to keep the week from falling over. Not enough to pretend I did a 90-minute session. I stopped needing it to be both.
One pair of dumbbells or adjustable?
I have used both. Adjustable is nicer. A pair of medium bells and a slower tempo also works. I have done this next to a couch.
What do I leave out on purpose?
Isolation finishers, long rest, anything that needs a machine. Twenty minutes is the container. If it does not fit, it waits.
